Applied Biblical Literacy
We will teach students how to get a deeper and clearer understanding of the Bible – both for personal study and for teaching others. We want to train students to become better at studying God’s word – both in terms of the way to approach individual books, and also how they see the details within the wider context of scripture’s flow.

So we will be looking at exegetical approaches for different types of Bible literature, but we will also be developing an understanding of the broad message of the Bible.

In teaching students this way we hope to excite in them a fresh passion for God’s word and to equip them to pass that passion on by helping others back home to see the relevance and cutting edge nature of God’s word for today’s world. It is vital that the course is more than purely academic, so at every stage we will be encouraging the students to learn from the truths of God’s word and character as we study His word together.

Cultural Awareness and Engagement
The elements of culture we have chosen to look at are those most prominent in shaping contemporary European worldviews. We will learn from experts how these aspects of culture work and influence our thinking. Then we will learn how to apply our reading of God’s word to form a Christian interaction with these different facets of our culture.

We recognise the many different cultures and traditions across Europe and see the unique opportunity to develop a cross-cultural understanding of Biblical truth broken away from some of the presuppositions of our societies.

So throughout the course we will encourage the dialogue between biblically based Christianity and the key ideologies, denominations and religions in our continent.

Teaching that Multiplies - It's not going to end here!

We don’t just want to teach--we want to create a new generation of Christians who will lead others through their words and their example in every area of society.

We will teach you to pass on to others back home.

Students will learn through lectures, open discussions, group work, and directed personal study. Additionally all students will participate in teaching practice critiqued by small groups of their peers.

We feel that a two-stage process is needed, whereby we first move to a structure which staff can more easily access and update and then to redesign the look and feel of the site. By adopting this approach we will be able to get fresh material onto the site in the short term, whilst giving due time to considering look, feel and ‘branding’.

We are aiming to move to the ‘interim’ structure in the near future. So look out for a whole new set of menu options and pictures and a gradual rollout of new content and functionality.

Where can you learn about Genesis and Identity, Revelation and Media, Luke and basic economic principles? Where can you learn both “Bible and Culture”? This Schloss Mittersill course is unique in Europe; people with a passion for aligning the Word and the World often think “Oh, how amazing” and are immediately drawn to it.

“B&C08” will be very intensive and challenging. It includes:
•	7 books of the Bible from different types of literature with a focus on principles of exposition and application. This will help raise Biblical literacy.
•	7 topics that shape Europe and our worldview with an emphasis on how to deal with them from a sound Biblical foundation; how to act as salt and light.
•	7 weeks of training to speak up relevantly for Christ in this continent. The skills and knowledge B&C participants learn will not stay on the shelf!

For full information visit www.bibleandculture.org or download the brochure here (263kb).

Who are these B&C people? 2 months before the start of the programme, there are already 18 committed participants from Portugal, Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Austria, Sweden, Italy, Ukraine and Macedonia. They are the kind of key people who will influence others, either as a student worker, social worker, or future pastor. For many of them this will be the only time they will participate in a programme like this before they invest themselves in their careers. For others, it will be the perfect preparation for a new ministry.

Many of the young graduates we have targeted this course at leave university with debt or very little money or work ‘soft currency’ countries – that’s why we offer this course for the smallest possible fee. We trust the Lord to give his people the desire to fund scholarships. Maybe you also thought “Oh, how amazing” and would like to invest in B&C?! If so, please contact Christian Bensel for more information.

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Schloss Mittersill! Our Schloss Mittersill board meeting was held at the Schloss a couple weeks ago and I wanted to write with good news. First, it is great to see how well our staff is working together – how the leadership team of David Jones, Andrzej Turkanik, John Baker, and Christian Bensel are interacting and how Hans Brennsteiner and our food service and housekeeping teams are serving our growing number of guests. It is a joy to see the place humming with excitement!

Second, I am very pleased with the development of our Schloss Mittersill board of directors. We have made great progress in creating a new vision for the ministry of Schloss Mittersill and overseeing the implementation of new strategies and tactics to help instigate a Christian Renaissance in Europe. Even in the midst of some challenging years, the board has charted a course that has allowed the ministry to remain on solid financial footing, even while launching this new vision. We now have taken action on our legal structure that will enable us to focus more attention on our ministry and program activities. We believe this action will help the ministry to become stronger and more agile as time goes by.

Third, our Bible & Culture course, after one year as a pilot program, is ready to go full speed ahead, from July 20 to September 6. We are hoping to have 25 participants in this full-time, in-residence course and have been pleased with the numbers registering so far. We will likely need some scholarship funds to enable Christian leaders, especially from Central and Eastern Europe to attend, so don’t be surprised to see an appeal in your mailbox soon! I do encourage you to prayerfully consider a financial gift for this important program and for the upcoming Arts Conference as well.

After 20 years of being part of the SM family, I have never been more excited about the future of this place we all love and our calling to serve the Kingdom of God throughout Europe. Please do keep us in your prayers – we are most grateful for your support.

Sincerely,

Von Tav Lupton, Vorstandsvorsitzender von Schloss Mittersill

Liebe Freunde,

Letting scripture shape our world

20 July - 7 September 2008

Bible and Culture is an intensive 7 week course at Schloss Mittersill, Austria, in Partnership with IFES.

For more information visit bibleandculture.org

This course will raise Biblical literacy and the ability to approach the complex issues of today’s culture from a biblically informed Christian position.

Throughout this course we will ask the question: How does scripture challenge the presuppositions of the world we live in and how does it then reinform and influence these presuppositions?

We will
• study 7 books of the Bible from different literary genres
• study 7 cultural topics that shape Europe today
• learn how to connect and multiply by teaching others back home – both in formal and informal settings
...so that the opportunity for impact among believers is multiplied.
